After taking a long, inadvertent, blogging sabbatical, I am beginning to pray about my comeback. With that in mind, the big question is – what can I do to serve you most effectively?

So help! Send me some ideas of what would be most beneficial to you.

BTW – I have never been more excited about what God is doing & I love you being a part!

First, and foremost, I am off the charts pumped that I am no longer leaking spinal fluid!!! I am so grateful to God for what He did! I am also thankful for having a great surgeon, Jeff Nees, who trusts God & does incredible work. Plus, I can’t say enough to express my gratitude to my wife for taking care of me! And then there is our church family… You leave me speechless!!! The way you have prayed, encouraged, and taken care of our family is remarkable!

Here are a few other things that I am pumped about:

  • Vintage Christmas starts this Sunday!!! We are going to be looking at the tradition of Advent! Can’t wait!
  • We are providing some Advent resources for everyone! I love the thought of families have daily devotionals together through the Christmas season!
  • I love that people are bringing toys to help provide Christmas for people in need!!!
  • This year we are having a “Christmas Spectacular” on the weekend of December 18th & 19th! We have never done anything like this! You will want to invite every person you know! We’ll be adding worship experiences to help facilitate the crowd!
  • Christmas Eve will simply be “Candles, Carols, and Communion” (And, cookies) It will be a little more intimate than it has been in the past! I can’t wait to read the Christmas story & get mauled by hundreds of kids! It truly is one of my favorite things!
  • 2011 will be our best year ever!!! Totally blown away by what God is lining up!
  • I get to serve alongside an amazing team! Robin, and I, are so blessed by the people we work with! It really is one big happy family!
  • I’ve never been prouder of what God is doing in our church! And, I have never been more excited about what God is doing in our church!
  • I can’t wait to be 100% and running at full throttle!

God is good!!!!

This past Tuesday night I had  the opportunity to share with our college students at LifeStream, our college worship experience! I have to say that it will go down in my book as one of the most fun nights of ministry ever for me! I shared with them some things that I wish someone had shared with me 20 years ago. Here are a few:

  • Never drive behind a Buick!
  • Abs get flabbier, not flatter! Work out now!
  • Dunlap disease! Wear your belly doesn’t lap over your belt!
  • Speedos are never cool!
  • Life isn’t about how much you make, it is about how much you invest (savings and giving)
  • Don’t look at your earning potential, look at you investing potential.
  • Victory or Victimization is a choice – a mindset – life isn’t about what happens to you, it is about how you respond to what happens to you – the only person who can control your response is you.
  • Rejection sucks! And it never goes away! So learn how to blow it off early & it will save you a ton of hurt.
  • Some people are precious, some people are jerks – learn how to live with them both.
  • Critical people never win! And they are always miserable as they lose.
  • Don’t wait for others to make you successful, it is not their responsibility
  • You’ll never see great success without great risk! But, remember the greater the reward, the greater the rejection and responsibility.
  • Dream Big! Don’t settle for anything less than changing the world.
  • You are a brand! Live it & invest it!
  • How you think will ultimately determine how you live.
  • Satan’s greatest desire is to put fear in our heart

The Big 3:

  1. Life is all about our connections!
  2. Life is all about God's creativity working through us!
  3. Life is all about our confidence in God and who He created us to be!

What do you wish someone had told you?

So here we go! After much prayer, thought, reflection, fasting, and research I have concluded that in November 2010 I endorse….

The Church!!!

Yes, I am a political junkie! But more than a political junkie, I am passionate about the Bride of Christ living into her potential and truly making a marked difference in our world!

I am not talking about the church endorsing candidates, or getting behind certain issues. I am not talking about the church saying, “Yes” or “No” to someone else’s ideas. I am not talking about the church-bashing people for thinking differently than they do.

I am talking about the Bride of Christ, the Body of Christ, the House of God, the Church rising up to a new level of leadership! I am talking about the church praying for God to give us the most innovative, intuitive ideas and us implementing them! I am talking about the church getting off her seat, rolling up her sleeves, and getting to work!

I love how Henderson Hills Baptist Church is reaching those in need through their Ministries of Jesus. They provide free dental and medical care! They provide recovery counseling! They provide transformational counseling! They provide a fitness center!

I love how Christ Fellowship in Florida has an orphanage! I love how they have a ministry to help develop leaders in the marketplace! I love how they have a healthcare ministry!

I love how Gateway Church in the DFW area gives away cars to those in need! I love how they have helped single moms go back to college! I love how they dream of building an apartment complex for single moms! Providing them an affordable place to live, giving them a community for their kids, and helping support them as they get formal education!

I love how you, Journey Church, are moving into your call to see a city transformed! I love that you are tutoring kids in our public school systems! I love how you are about to launch an after school initiative for Jr. High students! I love how you are trusting God to provide the funds to build a hospital in Haiti! I love how you are continually becoming the church!

Those are just a few examples of what I love! But, there is so much more to be done! In November, as citizens of the greatest nation on earth, each one of us needs to go vote! We do need to pray, research, fast, etc. about the candidate we are going to elect, but more importantly we need to continue to do all we can to help the church become all she can be in transforming our communities, states, nation, and world!

I endorse the church! Her best years are yet to come!

Over the past several months I have received a few emails, and phone calls, asking me to meet with this years political candidates, hoping for my endorsement. While I am a political junkie at heart, I have not met with any of the candidates. It is not that I don’t care, I deeply do! Matter of fact, after much prayer & research I am ready to give my 2010 Election Endorsements!

But, before I do, here are a few of the questions I have asked in my process: (no particular order)

  1. Who has the best plan to deal with our defense and security issues?
  2. Who has the best plan for developing a generation of amazing leaders through education?
  3. Who has the best plan for developing an education system that is helping people live into their potential, not just knowing a set of facts?
  4. Who has the best plan to develop communities, a state, and a nation of entrepreneurial thinkers?
  5. Who has the best plan to develop a sustainable economic model in our local, state, and national budgets?
  6. Who has the best plan for helping people break out of the cycle of poverty?
  7. Who has the best plan for creating a healthcare model that will can be owned & enjoyed by all?

So, whom do I endorse? Check back tomorrow and I will share!

Project Hope

I am so proud of all the creative thoughts people at Journey are using to help raise the funds to build a hospital in Haiti! God is using your influence in tremendous ways to change people’s lives!

Thank you to everyone who helped pull off last night’s Project Hope Tailgate Party! The experience was incredible!

While I can’t promote everyone’s idea, every once in a while, I will pick one to help promote. Today’s winner is Jeremy Dalton.

Jeremy is having a poker tournament this Tuesday night at Sooner Legends! It is a $100 buy in, and all proceeds go the Project Hope! There are tons of great prizes for the winner of the tournament! (This is probably the only time in Journey’s history where I get to promote a Poker Tournament!)

If you are interested contact Jeremy at 209-1441.

Keep praying for creative ideas! I am so proud of you all!

When Controversy Hits

JourneyChurch.tv —  September 27, 2010 — Leave a comment

About 4 months ago I received an email sharing with me about a proposed proclamation coming before the City Council of Norman. Being the competitive person I am, and seeing things in a prophetic nature, I immediately blew up! Beyond, blowing up, I allowed my passion to consume me, and responded inappropriately.

After calming down I sought the counsel of my mentors, and went to meet with our Mayor to try to gain understanding on the issue. I took time to listen, and I took time to share with her my opinion on the issue.

This past Thursday I began to receive calls again, on this particular issue, with people asking me, “What are you going to do?” I think that is a great question!

How I handle controversial issues within our city:

First, I try to understand. It says in Proverbs 2 to seek understanding. I think, many times, Christians respond before understanding. For us to be a light we have to take time to hear and listen.

Second, I meet with the Mayor, and our counsel, to express my opinion on the matter. In doing so, I LISTEN first! I do not want to presume anything!

Third, I seek the counsel of mentors, and church leaders, on how to respond to the issue. I am simply not wise enough to go at things on my own.

Fourth, I remember my core values of Honoring God, building healthy relationships, and having a blast! When there is an issue I think I need to address I need to do so in a way that builds on the core values. If I express my opinion in a way that is unhealthy to relationships I miss my purpose.

What does this mean for you?

  1. Be aware of what is going on in your community! In the City of Norman, you can go online to read the City Council Agenda to see what they are voting on. I encourage you to do so on a consistent basis!
  2. Seek understanding and clarity on the issues.
  3. Share your opinions with you Council members!
  4. Honor God, build healthy relationships, and have a blast!

One of the surprising things to me is how unintentional people are about the talent that God has given them. My observation is that undeveloped talent is one of the greatest lids placed on people lives today. So, with that being said, here is the question:

What are you intentionally doing to develop the talent that God has given you?

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Take a Strength Finders Test
  • Hire a Personal Coach (I know you can’t afford one! I can see why you wouldn’t want to sacrifice your cable or cell phone to invest in your future. Reality, you can’t afford not to get coaching from somewhere!!!)
  • Go to a conference
  • Do a Biblical Study on the topic that ties to your talent
  • Get a mentor
  • Read a book a month
  • Memorize scriptures that encourage you
  • Quit having a pity party over how you have seen your best days and didn’t steward them well
  • Embrace God’s grace
  • Live life with excellence
  • Change your habits! Stop doing some things that are holding you back!
  • Evaluate everything!

I could go on forever on this one! God has something great in store for you! Go discover it! Let me know how you intentionally invest in your talent.
